Which is more effective: Chem-Dry or Steam Cleaning

Chem dry's basic method is to spray a carbonated cleaning agent on your carpet and then use a floor buffer with an absorbent cotton pad to buff the carpet and absorb loosened soil into the pad. Although not called so by the company, this is known as bonnet cleaning. Other dry cleaning methods involve working an absorbent powder compound or, in some cases, foam in to the fibers and then removing the substance along with the soils they contain. Chemical dry cleaning and bonnet cleaning has it's place in the industry. It is known an acceptable method for lightly soiled fabrics or carpet containing a low pile (industrial, indoor and outdoor grade). However, the major textile manufactures recommend steam cleaning (hot water extraction) to properly care for their products. Hot water extraction, known as steam cleaning, is when heated water and/or cleaning solution is sprayed or injected on or in the fibers, along with simultaneous extraction to remove the heated solution with the soils it contains. Due to it's ability to actually rinse and extract, the majority of cleaning experts recognize properly performed hot-water extraction as the best overall way to care for nearly all types of carpets and wet-cleanable upholstery alike.
Plainly speaking, what ever soil, residue, odor or anything else that is not absorbed in the spinning pad during chem dry's process or bonnet cleaning is still left in the carpet. A good comparison would be the difference between sweeping a rug with a broom or going over it with an industrial strength vacuum cleaner. The vacuum will, of course, remove more soil. While a broom will take the loose dirt off the surface, it cannot remove soils that are deep within; in fact, some soils that appear to be gone are only spread around or pushed deeper into the pile. Likewise, on moderately soiled plush carpets, Berber and certainly heavily soiled carpet, it is incapable of removing embedded soils and stains completely. This is why reappearing stains are a common occurrence. Accordingly, this is why we agree with major textile manufacturer's recommendation, as well as the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification), that deep steam cleaning with maximum extraction power is the preferred method on nearly all carpets and conditions.
The truth that many "dry-clean" companies either don't know or won't admit is that the Steam Cleaning process is safe and does not cause mold or damage to your Carpet or upholstery. Nonetheless, any method that over wets and under removes excess moisture can cause mold, odors and damage. Today's advanced steam cleaning equipment, especially truck-mounted, along with today's products and techniques are easily capable of a safe and more effective cleaning than methods that use less moisture and a spinning towel.
Surprisingly enough, Chem dry themselves not only offers, but recommends their van-mounted hot water extraction (steam cleaning) as their highest priced premium quality cleaning. This is especially true for soiled carpets with traffic areas and Berber carpeting. While they advertise not to "risk steam cleaning", their top of the line method employs a truck-mounted steam cleaning system and a Rx-20 rotary hot water extraction tool. Evidently, they have recognized that a truck-mounted steam cleaning units ability to heat cleaning solution, apply it and extract at once is a more effective way to remove soil and stains.
So what is the difference between them any other steam cleaners?
The major difference is that their cost for steam cleaning cost more than the average steam cleaning company will charge. Also, the Rx-20 and other rotating carpet steam extraction tools such as Rotovac, can make the average steam cleaning equipment more efficient and less fatiguing. It is important to note that these tools are used by many and are available to any company. The other differences are limiting factors for Chem-Dry cleaners. Namely: They can only use the Chem-Dry brand products and their equipment is adjusted to use less water than many hot water extraction systems use. Again, any professional steam cleaner can adjust the amount of water and it's pressure if they choose. Low water volume can be beneficial for some circumstances - especially upholstery. It is a limiting factor because less water volume directly means less cleaning and rinsing ability per and given time period. For instance: If your hands are really dirty and you turn your faucet to barely a constant flow it will take longer to properly wash and rinse them than if the faucet was on full flow. And, if two people had equally filthy hands and were allotted 10 seconds each to wash them, the one having full flow would end up with cleaner, better rinsed hands. Therefore, a system that uses more hot water volume to rinse through the fibers and has the ability to extract that additional water volume will effectively clean faster and better. So, while Chem-Dry's upgraded method is more effective than there standard, it is a low volume steam cleaning for which the consumer normally pays more.
Superior Fabric Cleaners system will clean many times better than a chemical dry process, it is safe, will cost you less and will dry just as fast. We suggest saving time and money and making sure it is cleaned properly from top to bottom the first time around. Go with the beefed up instead of the tuned down method recommended by the people who make the carpets. The choice is clear - Insist on the Big Truck!
